Introduction:
Cyperus rotundus (purple nut sedge) is a weed in over 90 countries. The word cyperus derives from the Greek (kupros) and rotundus is from Latin, meaning round. Cyperus grows rapidly and fills the soil with its tangle of roots and rhizomes. The Romans used this plant as emmenogogue in uterine complaints. It is regarded in Traditional Chienese medicine, as the chief of all herbs the first line of choice for treating Gynecological disorders. Cyperus rotundus was held in high esteem by the ancient sage’s of India. It is widely distributed throughout India up to 1828m.This super bulb has been used throughout the ages for the treatment of numerous illnesses. It enjoys an important place among medicinal herbs in India science ancient times. The plant is mentioned in the ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine Charaka Samhita in 100 A.D.

Gastroprotective Activity – C. rotundus increases the activity of superoxide dismutase, cellular glutathione and glutathione peroxidase, and inhibits the lipid peroxidation in the gastric mucosa. This herb works to inhibit the gastric ulcers through an antioxidant defense mechanism.

Anti-obesity Activity – Cyperus rotundus (musta) is a rich source of flavonoids, ascorbic acid and polyphenol which are responsible for its anti-oxidant activity. It reduces oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and terminating chain reaction. It reduces obesity and has antiobesity effect. It burns and metabolizes fat, improves process of fat metabolism, chelates already present fat and removes it out of the body.

Anti-inflammatory & Anti-Arthritic Activity - C. rotundus has anti-inflammatory, analgesic effect which make it suitable in the arthritic conditions.

Wound-healing Activity – This plant has anti-inflammatory activity and the process of wound healing occurs in four phases :

(i) coagulation which prevents blood loss,
(ii) inflammation and debridgement of wound,
(iii) repair, including cellular proliferation, and
(iv) tissue remodeling and collagen deposition

The wound healing property of Cyperus rotundus is due to the presence of its active principles, which accelerates the healing process and confers breaking strength to the healed wound.

Hepatoprotective Activity – C. rotundus has significant protective effect by lowering serum levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin.

Clinical Studies:
Obesity is an important health problem in India. Twenty two millions Indian are obese, especially abdominally obese. An article was published in the International Journal of Ayurvedic and Pharma Research regarding the antiobesity effect of Cyperus rotundus due to its antioxidant activity. Musta helps to burn and metabolize fat, improves process of fat metabolism, chelates already present fat and removes it out of the body.

Cyperus rotundus is a herb with many health benefits. It is being used for various ailments like arthritis, obesity, gastric ulcers and recently it has been established as a herb for hepatitis B. This is a herb with multiple action.
