Habitat:
Achyranthes aspera L. (Amaranthaceae) is distributed as weed throughout India, tropical Asia and other parts of the world.

Introduction:
Achyranthes aspera L., locally known as “Telenge or ambulale” is one of the traditionally used anti-fertility plants in the indigenous health care delivery system of Ethiopia.

Achyranthes aspera L. (Family Amaranthaceae) is a common plant of the study area abundantly found in wastelands. It is known as “Prickly chaff flower” in English and “Chirchita”, “Onga”, “Latjeera” or “Apamarga” in local language and dialects. Apamarg, literally means kept keeps away from the ‘dosas’. The plant is highly esteemed by traditional healers and used in treatment of asthma, bleeding, in facilitating delivery, boils, bronchitis, cold, cough, colic, debility, dropsy, dog bite, dysentery, ear complications, headache, leucoderma, pneumonia, renal complications, scorpion bite, snake bite and skin diseases etc [Jain 1991]. Traditional healers claim that addition of A. aspera would enhance the efficacy of any drug of plant origin.

In Regveda there is no reference about this plant, in Yajurveda has referred Apamarga by saying “Apamarga, please prevent us from ill actions and bad dreams”. Accordingly Apamarga can enhance the will power and controls the minds of the persons who ever use it. Saktu (powder) of Apamarga having the Rakshagna (Antimicrobial) property and remove the excessive water from the body. Atharvaveda refers Apamarga at about eleven places. It considers this drug as the Lord of all plants on earth because it can increase life span by wiping away all the diseases. Apamarga is useful to cure diseases caused by thirst and hunger, defects of the organs, speech; sterility, physical debility and all other ailments. Atharvaveda describes that Apamarga can sweep away chronic diseases, the evil habit of using foul language and also the ailments which cause severe pain as well as decrease in vitality.

Medicinal Uses:

Apamarga (Achyranthes aspera) has been used as diuretic and it is useful to treat gynecological disorders, cough, skin rash, nasal infection, chronic malaria, impotence, fever, asthma, piles and snake bites etc. It is also used to treat various infections, nephrolithiasis, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Pharmacological Actions:

Hepatoprotective – Apamarg shows hepatoprotective activity and decreases the levels of SGPT, SGOT, Alkaline Phosphatase and total bilirubin.

Diuretic – Apamarg significantly increases renal clearance of sodium, potassium and chloride ions due to its diuretic property.

Immunostimulant – A. aspera has immunostimulant property and it stimulates cell mediated immune system by increasing phagocytic function.

Antidiabetic – A. aspera helps to reduce the blood glucose level to its normal by increasing plasma insulin.

Antioxidant- Apamarg, effectively prevents free radical mediated cell damage by free radicals scavenging activity and thus can be used as a potent source of natural antioxidant compounds. Hence, it is very useful in diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol etc.

Cardiovascular Activity - Achyranthine, a water-soluble alkaloid isolated from Achyranthes aspera, decreases blood pressure and heart rate, dilates blood vessels, and increases the rate and amplitude of respiration.

Conclusion:
Apamarg is a weed plant, used since Vedic period for its medicinal benefits. It is known to vanish all types of diseases and gives longevity. It is used in many diseases because of its pharmacological properties like, diuretic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunostimulant, hepatoprotective etc. Hence, it could be a boon to the medicine world.
